The Chesterfield Sofa is a type of upholstered settee that first appeared in England in the early 19th century. The first fully upholstered and sprung sofa, the Chesterfield may have been named for the town of the same name in Derbyshire. More likely, it is named for one of the heads of the Stanhope family, an Earl of Chesterfield. (Four different men succeeded to the title in the latter half of the 19th Century.) The Sixth Earl was a fashion setter, and a type of double breasted overcoat is named for him. The chesterfield has upright (as opposed to sloping) rolled arms that come up to the same height as the back of the sofa. Early Chesterfields were usually upholstered in leather, with button tufted backs. Fabric upholstery became common by the turn of the 20th Century.
